âAnd bring her a glass of water.â
Ellis soon returned with both.
Pratt asked her, âHow did this happen?â
âIâ¦Iâm not really sure. We were struggling. He knocked me down. I kicked at him. After that, I donât remember anything.â
Sirens could be heard in the distance.
âHelp is on the way, Carolyn,â Ellis told her. âThe wounds arenât too deep. You should be okay.â
She turned to look at him. âYouâre sure? Iâm so tired.â She squeezed her eyes shut. âI was so stupid to think I could trap him. He was like a wild animal.â
âEverything will be okay now.â
Tears started falling from the girlâs eyes. âAre you sure?â
He nodded. âThe nightmare is over.â
Chapter Twenty-One
Pratt and Ellis led Carolyn Tucci, barefoot, around the perimeter of the room to the paramedics waiting at the door.
Pratt told one of the uniforms in the hall to accompany the girl to the hospital. âAnd make sure you keep a close eye on her until you hear from me.â
âWhat was that all about?â Ellis asked. âThe danger is over.â
âYou donât get whatâs going on yet, do you?â
âWhat am I not getting here?â
âA lot. Come on. Weâre going back downtown. Let the boys do their work in peace.â
The older man pulled him over to the side of the hall to let the forensics team through. As the lead passed, Pratt pulled him aside, telling him to get prints off the body right away.
âAnd that glass on the side table. I want prints off that too. Some are Ellisâs, but the others are the girlâs. I need everything on my desk, like, right now. Can you do that for me?â
âSure. Shouldnât be a problem, Pratt.â
Pratt borrowed Ellisâs phone and was on it most of the drive back to headquarters. The younger detective remained mystified by his mentorâs behavior.
On the sidewalk, Ellis stood in front of his partner, blocking the way. âWhat the hell is going on? Master is dead. We got our man.â
Pratt put his arm around Ellis. âCome upstairs with me. All shall be revealed.â
Ellis refused to move. âJust tell me one thing first.â
âSure. Fire away.â
âIs Carolyn Tucci a goddamned suspect?â
âYes.â
âHow the hell is that possible? And how did I completely miss it?â
Pratt laughed. âThose are questions two and three. I promised to answer only one. Come upstairs.â
McDonnell was waiting in his office. âWhat the hell is going on, Pratt?â
Gordon was also there. âWhat is your clown prince doing with you, Pratt? Heâs supposed to be on leave.â
The jolly mood began to seep from Prattâs face.
âYou werenât here, Flash, and I needed to make a quick decision. Ellis knew where Carolyn Tucci lived and was close by. I grabbed him.â
McDonnell frowned. âPratt, can you assure me weâre not going to have any problems because you included someone whose brother is involved in this case?â
The detective sat down on one of the chairs facing his bossâs desk.
âNo problem whatsoever. Mike Master was dead when we got there.â
âDid you get her statement?â
âNo. We sent her off to hospital. She had a few cuts on her hands and left shoulder.â
âDefending herself from her attacker?â
âMaybe.â
âWhat the hell do you mean, Pratt?â
Everyone elseâs expressions held the same question.
âAll will be revealed after the hospitalâs got her patched upâwhen sheâs brought in to give her statement.â
McDonnellâs phone rang.
âYesâ¦I figured as muchâ¦No, Iâm not exactly sure whatâs going onâ¦I understand thatâ¦Yes. I will call you as soon as I have a handle on where we standâ¦Right. ASAP .â He hung up.
