class.â
âAnd youâve talked me into letting her have a sleepover, which youâre helping with. You must have caught me at a weak moment.â He turned to her. âThanks for volunteering to help.â
âHold the applause and wait until we see if itâs a success,â she smiled.
He nodded, his long tapered fingers rubbing up and down the sides of the beer glass. âThereâs something else I want to get off my chest.â
She watched him. No other man had ever made her so aware of her femininity with just one look. He was a big man, but there was softness to his strength. She could easily slip into his arms. She shook it off and said, âWhat is that?â
âI apologize for nosing into your business with Perkins. I had no right.â
She blinked in surprise. âAccepted. And for the record, only in my head did our relationship get serious.â She met his gaze. âBrian is a nice guy. I think I fell more for the idea of love than I actually fell in love.â
He held her gaze. âIt can be incredible, I hear.â
She caught a flicker of something in his eyes. Regret. Loneliness. Was he saying his marriage wasnât as perfect as people had believed it to be?
She glanced away. No, this wasnât any of her business. âYou have Gracie and your family.â
He sighed. âYeah. A nosy father and a pushy brother. Whom you need to watch out for. Matt can be pretty charming.â
She doubted Matt was the Rafferty she had to worry about. She fought a smile. âIâll keep that in mind.â
Before he could speak, Sean carried out two large plates of food and placed them down on the table.
âSorry it took so long.â He placed his hands on his hips and grinned. âNothing like good food and conversation,â he said as a lone customer walked in the door. âGot to get to work.â He waved as he went behind the bar. âHello, Michael.â
Suddenly Evan was feeling like a teenager. He was far too aware of the woman beside him. The more time he spent with Jenny the more he felt he wanted her. Question was, did he want to do anything about it?
âThis smells delicious,â she said.
âDad wasnât lying when he said itâs the best around.â
He watched as Jenny picked up her oversized sandwich and took a bite, leaving a smear of sauce on the side of her mouth. Desire shot through him as he fought the urge to lean forward and remove it, giving both a taste. Instead he picked up a napkin.
âHere, you have sauce on your mouth.â He reached out and wiped it off. She froze, allowing him to clean her up. Their eyes locked and instantly he was mesmerized. âDamn, woman,â he breathed, then pulled away. âEat your food before we both get into trouble.â
Twenty minutes later theyâd finished the meal.
âI canât finish all this,â Jenny announced, leaving half her food. âIâm stuffed.â
Evan patted his stomach. âI didnât have any trouble.â He hadnât realized how hungry he was. And not only for food. He looked at Jenny. Although he didnât want to leave her, the direction his thoughts were taking wasnât a good idea.
âI hate to cut this short,â he began, âbut I need to get up early tomorrow. Iâm helping Matt move cattle.â
She groaned. âI think they should outlaw Mondays. Butif truth be told, Iâd probably get up early anyway. I love dawn.â
Evan stood. âItâs my favorite time, too.â He placed some bills on the table, but when she reached for her wallet he stopped her. âDonât even think about it.â
âBut you donât need to pay for my supper.â
âWhat if I want to?â He helped her out of the booth. âWhat if I wanted to share dinner and conversation with you?â
Her gaze held his. âI just didnât want you to feel you had
