outside?â
âOutside.â
âShow me how you left, where you were.â
âThe real stairs?â
âWhy not?â
Matt leads them down the dark back stairs to the door with a crash bar that opens on the backyard.
âHere.â
Christie says, âNow, you knew what number to call. Had you ever called before?â
âNo.â
âBut you knew what to do. Good. Then?â
Mattâs face collapses into a frown. âI ⦠I could tell they werenât going to come. So I went back up.â
âShow me?â
Christie makes him show them everything. He keeps checking his watch. âDid you pause? Did you wait before going up?â
âA little bit.â
âGood. Smart. Show me how long?â
Matt pauses and then begins to move. Three seconds. Five. Ten.
âWas there a reason you went around front?â
âI thought I might find somebody who could help. A person walking in or out.â
âAh, makes sense. Did you see anybody?â
âNobody was around, so I just went back up.â
âShow us your movements.â
Matt opens a gate and they all go around to the front.
âDid you see the man again?â
âNo.â
âHow do you think he got away?â
âI guess the back stairs after I left. Or maybe the front before I went around. I donât know.â
âMakes sense,â Christie murmurs again. âIâm sorry to ask you all this but it could help. Could you tell me anything you saw when you went back up?â
âThe door was partways open.â
âAbout how much?â
âOnly a little bit.â
Christie nods. He doesnât ask anything for a while.
Finally the boy says, âI had to slide in because she was on the floor.â
âTell me, if you want to, what you were thinking then.â
âI tried to make her talk. I had the phone so I called 911 again. I told them they had to come.â
âVery good.â
âYeah. But then I ran next door to see if Dr. Panikkar was home.â
âBecause heâs a doctor.â
âBecause ⦠because ⦠I was afraid to do that thing where you push the chest to make a person breathe.â
âDid you know how to do it?â
âKind of. From TV.â Matt is breathing raggedly.
âThatâs a hard job. Almost impossible when thereâs an injury.â
âI thought I would make it worse.â
âThat was correct. You didnât do anything wrong.â
âI didnât?â
âNot a thing. You were great.â
Colleen lets out a big breath of relief. This was hard, very hard, watching a kid wound tight, falling apart.
âTell me, when you were outside, did you notice a car that was unfamiliar or anything like that?â
âNo, I wasnât looking anywhere. I was thinking: should I go back up the stairs or just wait.â
âYou did fine,â Christie says evenly.
When Matt gets ahead of them, Colleen asks, âBoss? Why did you make him go through it again?â
âBecause Chief had the same idea as McGranahan. Liked the idea of a bad seed. I swore Iâd check the kid out for consistency. I swore Iâd have an expert witness it. You witnessed it. Youâve got the creds.â
âMe?â she says with some surprise. She does have a masterâs in counseling, though she hasnât practiced formally for a few years.
Christie takes out a handkerchief and touches it to his face. He is shaking. âSo I did it. What did you think?â
âI thought he was truthful and that heâs been harboring some guilt about not doing even more.â
âRight.â
Matt turns on his heel and comes back to them. âI forgot to say last night that I know what kind of car the man had.â
âIâm not sure what you mean,â Christie says.
âWhen I was out last night, I looked for one like it. It was a
