He was a sick bastard, what more did it matter?

"I think he might have succeeded with Sam's sister. But he was creating bonds where none where before. His goal was to force a bond with a certain someone so he could create the perfect family line. I mean, I don't understand why he didn't simply breed you, he didn't need a bond for that."

My gorge rose and I wretched. I sat up, clutching the sheet to my chest, trying to hide my shock and horror. Dr. Blattodea was watching me with glittering eyes. There was nothing but cruelty on her face. She enjoyed seeing my reactions.

I spat out, "You disgust me. You could have fought being turned, fought working for the Reivers."

She threw her head back and laughed.

"Oh dear, you really don't get it. Your father and I started the Reivers."

Sam said, "Holy shit, that's why no one can ever find a base. You just blend in until you need something."

She clapped her hands sardonically. "You win a prize! It's been very lucrative financially as well as advancing my experiments." She turned her eyes back to me, her smile cold and her eyes lasers. "I have missed your father's input, it was invaluable. But don't you worry, I'll take my loss out on your hide."

She gestured at the cube. "Sam, you'll find what you are looking for there. I will give you time to get cleaned up before I return. I think I'll find you suitably pliant and willing to serve my needs."

With that, she slipped out of the door, leaving wreckage behind her. He grabbed the cube and I turned away, feeling for my clothing. The shower turned on and I got up. It no longer mattered if he saw me. I plunged into the water and tried to clean his touch off of me. No matter how hard I scrubbed, I could still feel his hands on me. My back was to him while he read the cube's data, and I let myself weep while I could have some privacy.

I was jolted by a shot of excitement and suddenly bewildered, until I realized I was feeling what Sam felt. I tried to pull away from it, but it pulled me in like hot taffy. It would be so easy to lose myself in him, to just give over to every emotion he felt, to give myself up. Like my mother had. I shuddered, realizing how horrible it must have been for her and how it had finally driven her completely mad.

I stepped out from under the water, let the blast of air dry me and slipped into the shipsuit. I slipped my feet into the rugged boots. Somehow they made me feel less vulnerable, stronger. I finally looked over to him, my heart sinking at the wild exultation I felt coming from him. He looked up and flinched away from me.

He frowned and said, "You understand, I had to do it."

I shrugged, "Of course. After all, I gave her what she wanted as well."

His eyes narrowed, "What did she give you? She said we both asked for the same thing."

I raised one eyebrow, he didn't realize Dr. Blattodea meant we both asked about his sister. "I asked for information."

"But she didn't give you a cube?"

"She gave me the information I needed."

His lips tightened and he started to say something, pausing for a long moment, staring into my eyes. I just stared back. I understood so much better why my mother had given up, sunk into my father's madness. The pain I was feeling was never going to stop. Sam wasn't capable of feeling the depth of the bond. I was alone.

    He finally said, "She's alive."

"So you really will do anything the good doctor tells you, to see her again." My voice was dull and flat. All I could picture was turning into my mother. An empty vessel that only came alive when he was near.

His hands clenched at his sides and his voice grew hoarse. "You don't understand...I have to see her, to save her."

"I do understand. I have a brother after all." I settled against the wall, sliding down into a cross-legged position. "Please, keep reading. Find out everything you can about your sister. I'm going to meditate."
