said Lawson.
âBaby, if this is about Saturday night, itâs cool. You were right. We donât need to rush into anything. We love each other, and you, me, and Namon are a family. Thatâs all that matters.â The women exchanged ominous glances that Garrett picked up on immediately. âYouâre acting strange. Whatâs going on here?â
Angel was the first to rise. âI think we better get out of here so they can talk.â
Reginell followed suit. âYeah. See you later, sis.â
Sullivan leaned down and gave Lawson a quick hug. âCall me when you get everything figured out.â
Kina squeezed Lawsonâs hand. âThink about what I said. He has a right to know.â They all filed out quietly, leaving Lawson alone with Garrett.
Garrett took a seat next to Lawson. âOkay, whatâs wrong? This seems serious.â
âIt is,â she confessed. âI ran into Mark today.â
âMark who?â
âMark Vinson.â She paused. âNamonâs biological father.â
âAre you serious?â
Lawson nodded.
Garrett slumped down into the sofa, blown away. âWas it just a coincidence, or has he been looking for you?â
âCoincidence. He works at North Central.â
âDid he say anything to you?â
âWe spoke for a minute, but I donât think he had any idea who I was.â
âHow do you feel about that?â
She sighed. âIâm relieved. The less he remembers about that night, the better.â
âWhy? I mean, you are gonna tell him about Namon, arenât you?â
âI wasnât planning on it, not unless it becomes absolutely necessary.â
âLawson, the man is Namonâs father.â
âSo what? What contribution has Mark made to Namonâs life that I couldnât have gotten from the local sperm bank?â
âThat doesnât matter. He still has a right to knowâthey both do.â
âWho cares about Markâs rights?â
âA judge might, for one.â
âWhat about my rights? Iâve been raising Namon by myself since I was in high school. Donât I have the right to protect him and make sure heâs well adjusted? Donât I have the right to decide who should and shouldnât be a part of his life? Itâs not only my right, Garrett; itâs my duty as his mother.â
âItâs Markâs duty, too, as his father.â
Lawson jumped up, her temper flaring. âJust whose side are you on?â
Garrett held her. âYours. You donât even have to ask me that.â
âThen act like it,â she replied coldly. âYou said that you wanted to adopt Namon. Do you honestly think that Mark would just sign him over to you if he knew the truth?â
âI donât know what he might do, but we both know there has to be a public notice put in the paper about the adoption petition. Heâs bound to find out sooner or later.â
âWell, Iâm praying for later .â
âItâs already been thirteen years. How much more time do you need?â
âAs long as it takes to protect my child. Who knows how Mark will react once he finds out we have a teenage son together?â
âKeeping quiet would be fine if Mark was off somewhere never to be seen or heard from again, but heâs here, Lawson. You donât have much of a choice.â
Lawson paced the floor as she contemplated her next move. âThereâs another alternative to telling Mark about Namon, and it might be the only way out of this.â She entwined her hands with his. âWe can leave.â
Garrett exhaled. â Leave ? Lawson, you canât be serious.â
âI am!â she affirmed. She squeezed his hands and stated emphatically, âBaby, letâs do it! Letâs get married, take Namon, and get as far away from here as we can.â
âAnd leave your home, this new job, your
