church, and your friends? You know you donât want to do that, and I know that youâre not a quitter. Youâre not somebody who runs from your problems, you deal with them.â
âThis is how I intend to deal with this one.â
Garrett cupped her face in his hands. âLawson, I love you. Thereâs nothing I want more than for you to be my wife, but I canât marry you like this, or let you duck out like a coward.â
âBut, Garrettââ
âI said no,â he stated firmly. âRunning might be a quick fix, but thatâs not going to stop Namon from wondering about his biological father. You canât just hide this from him. Youâve got to face this situation eventually.â
Lawson snapped her fingers. âSo, just like that, you want me to hand over my son to a virtual stranger?â
âIâm not suggesting anything that radical. I just donât want you to do something thatâs only going to make things worse. We need to seek God on the matter and follow His lead. Obedience is better than sacrifice. Heâs not going to allow this man to take your son away from you. Have faith.â
Lawson dropped her head into her hands and gave in. âYouâre right. What was I thinking?â
He wrapped his arms around her. âYou werenât thinking, you were panicking. Weâll figure this thing out, though.â
Lawson lifted her eyes to meet his. â We? â
âYeah. Weâre a team, right?â
Lawson managed a faint smile. âRight.â
Garrett sat down, and Lawson swathed herself in his embrace. âSo, when are you going to break the news to him?â he asked her.
âAre you talking about Mark or Namon?â
âI guess both.â
âI donât know. Once the truth gets out, there is no turning back. Thatâs what scares me,â she admitted.
âDonât be scared. Iâm behind you all the way, no matter what you decide. Namon is your son, so do what you think is best. Just remember, baby, no secret stays one for very long. Everything done in the dark eventually comes to light.â
Chapter 10
âWhat kind of man just wakes up one day and decides to turn his back on his family?â
â Angel King
Â
âSo, what do you think about this Lawson situation?â asked Angel as she and Kina shopped for groceries on Kinaâs âapproved foodsâ list after leaving Lawsonâs house.
Kina sighed. âThatâs a tough one. I know Lawson is just trying to look out for her son, but I donât think keeping him from his father is the best way to do it. Parents try so hard to protect their children, but sometimes nothing you do is ever enough.â
âAre we still talking about Lawson here?â
Kina stopped. âNo, Iâm worried about Kenny,â she confided. âHeâs been saying things I donât think a kid his age ought to be thinking about, much less be putting into words.â
âWhat did he say?â
âHe said he would kill EâBell if he ever did anything to me. It kind of scared me to hear him talk like that.â
Angelâs eyes widened. âKill him, as in murder?â
âYeah.â
Angel blew out a breath. âThatâs serious, Kina. What did you tell him?â
âI talked to him and told him that he shouldnât say things like that, but I donât know . . . something in his eyes made me nervous.â
âWhat has EâBell done that would make Kenny think he needed to protect you?â Angel had long suspected that EâBell was abusive, but could never get Kina to admit it.
âKenny heard us arguing the other night, and you know how kids are. He read more into it than there was. I mean, I know that EâBellâs not perfect,â acknowledged Kina, âbut heâs given up a lot for us. Who knows where football wouldâve taken him if he hadnât let
