the cockpit. âMabel Freeman,â she said, extending her hand towards Eleanor. âAlso known as the Pincher.â
Zackâs jaw dropped. So did Eleanorâs.
Zack noticed her hand was trembling as she shook Granâs hand and stuttered her name in reply.
âItâs a great honour to meet you,â said Eleanor. âMy father has told me a lot about you.â
âOh?â said Gran. âAnd whoâs your father, soldier?â
âSilas Sterne,â said Eleanor.
âAh! Silas!â said Gran. âI taught the little whipper-snapper everything he knows. Has he caught that Great White Bum yet?â
âYou mean Zack hasnât told you?â said Eleanor.
âTold me what?â said Gran.
âWe havenât exactly had a lot of time to chat,â said Zack.
âPlenty of time for that later,â said Gran, turning back to Eleanor. âFirst things first. Whatâs the situation, soldier?â
Eleanor shrugged and glanced at Zack. âItâs bad news,â she said. âA few hours after Zack left the Academy I picked up the approaching invasion of bums on the bum-radar. They seem to be coming from Uranus.â
âFrom my what?â said Zack.
âNo, you idiot,â said Eleanor. âURANUS!â
âYou mind your language, soldier!â said Gran. âYouâre not too old for me to box your ears, you know.â
âNo, you donât understand,â said Eleanor. âThe bums are from Uranus!â
âLanguage!â said Gran crossly.
âI meant the planet,â said Eleanor.
âOh,â said Gran. âMy mistake.â
âIâve seen them,â said Zack. âTheyâre attaching themselves to people and turning them into zombies!â
âZombie bums!â said Eleanor. âI should have known it! Zombie bums from Uranus!â
âDid you say zombie bums from Uranus?â said Zackâs bum.
âYes,â said Zack. âZombie bums from Uranus!â
âLanguage!â said Gran.
âI meant the planet, Gran,â said Zack.
âThe planet âGranâ?â said Zackâs bum. âI thought you said Uranus!â
âLanguage!â said Gran.
âNo!â said Zack. âI didnât mean there was a planet called Gran. I meant the planet Uranus!â
âLanguage!â said Gran.
âWeâre talking about the planet!â said Eleanor, Zack and Zackâs bum in unison.
âOh,â said Gran. âMy mistake again. I thought you meant . . .â
âOh, this is pointless!â said Eleanor. âTheyâre from outer space, okay?â
âI thought you said they were from Uranus!â said Gran.
Eleanor groaned. âThey ARE from Uranus!â she said.
âLanguage!â said Gran.
âI MEANT THE PLANET!â shouted Eleanor.
âAll right, all right,â said Gran. âI may be old but Iâm not deaf!â
âBut how can you be so sure that thatâs where theyâre from?â said Zack.
âBecause my dad has seen them before,â said Eleanor. âRemember he was away on a secret inter-planetary bum-fighting E-mission sorting out some sort of trouble on . . . ?â She paused and glanced at Gran. She gave Zack a meaningful look. âOn you know where,â she said.
âOf course!â said Zack. âSo this was the trouble!â
âWell, sort of,â said Eleanor. âAnd sort of not.â
âWhat do you mean, soldier?â said Gran.
Eleanor winced.
âWell, apparently the unmanned space probe, Voyager 2, sent back images showing that the rings around the planet Uranus were made up of bums,â she said. âDad went up there with two other bum-fighters to investigate. As you know, he was called back to help fight the bum-revolution on Earth.â
âSo the other two bum-fighters are still up there?â
